Bridges Seismic Vulnerability Study

Josephine County

Grants Pass, Oregon

Josephine County Bridge

Hart Crowser is part of the team that recently assessed seismic vulnerabilities for 26 bridges in the Grants Pass area. In addition to the bridge evaluation, the County asked for a prioritization of bridge repairs based on the needs of the community for emergency response and with considerations for long-term recovery. The County is conducting an engineering and community outreach study to determine these prioritization goals. The innovative approach went beyond structural assessment of bridges to include geotechnical hazards, community issues, route vulnerabilities, and emergency response needs in the event of the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. This approach more fully provided Public Works and Emergency Management insight as to what needs to be addressed first to give the County the most cost-effective and beneficial approach. Hart Crowser led the seismic resilience portion of the study and assisted in developing a prioritization schedule for their bridges that will provide information for future work and funding opportunities.
