Highline Birch Wing Addition
Highline Medical Center
Hart Crowser provided geotechnical and seismic design recommendations for the addition of the Birch Wing to the main Highline Medical Center campus. The new wing is five levels (170,000 square feet), with the potential for four additional levels as part of a future expansion. The project included a new loading dock and a new 1,760-square-foot auxiliary building addition. An existing loading dock and approach area were upgraded and expanded. Construction of new parking areas required a significant cut into an existing slope and construction of a permanent, 14- to 28-foot-high permanent tieback shoring wall. Project challenges included work in an active hospital facility, construction of new buildings immediately adjacent to existing structures that required underpinning, and the presence of undocumented fill at the site. Hart Crowser continued services through construction, observing geotechnical elements of foundation, shoring, and earthwork activities.
