Governors Island Park and Public Space

Hart Crowser was the geotechnical consultant for the redevelopment of Governors Island in New York Harbor. We developed concepts that allowed hills as high as 80 feet above the ground surface to be built within 20 feet of the shoreline, and a park with varying slopes, amphitheaters, and walkways. We developed strategies to recycle onsite demolition debris as fill and combined zones of lightweight fill, reinforced soil, and planting soils to create steep, plantable slopes in a safe environment.

Hart Crowser’s work on Governors Island won a National Honor Award from American the Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), placing it in the top 36 projects of the year. Governors Island competed with 150 other projects for this award and was recently recognized at the ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in Washington DC, hosted by Kevin Nealon.
