Everett Asarco Smelter Plume Residential and Park Soil Cleanup
Working under our Washington State Department of Ecology on-call contract, Hart Crowser has been involved in soil sampling, public involvement, and cleanup oversight. The Everett Smelter Site was established as an investigation site by Ecology in 1990, following discovery that a former smelter facility contributed hazardous substances to the environment with widespread arsenic, lead, cadmium, and other metals contamination from dumping and smokestack emissions. The facility operated from 1894 to 1912 and the former owner, ASARCO, decommissioned the facility by 1915. Urban re-development subsequently occurred and the general area surrounding the former smelter is now occupied by residential and commercial properties, some large roadways, and industrial facilities. We characterized lead- and arsenic-contaminated soil at over 283 residential properties and apartment complexes and 3 public parks and prepared individual remediation plans for each site.
